If you are considering starting your career in the professional sector, there’s no need to relocate to the City of London: we have a brilliant Legal and Financial zone for the south-west located in Bristol with incredible opportunities and amazing apprenticeships at all levels. For most of the corporates, this is their one office for the west of England and along with a range of adjacent industries, BS1 has become one of the most exciting places to work in the whole of this region!
Where is the City zone?
Our very own professional quarter is in the heart of Bristol in the BS1 postcode area. It is located extremely close to Temple Meads station and easily accessible by public transport including the ferry. Primary career sectors include accountancy, insurance, law and engineering.
The bigger firms
The largest accountancy firms are well known for recruiting apprentices each year, and in BS1, these include Deloitte, EY, Mazars, Grant Thornton and KPMG with BDO advertising a wide variety of degree level apprenticeships in audit, assurance and tax.
However, other household names in this district also recruit school leavers. These include Direct Line (insurance), IBM (business & technical), AECOM (civil engineering), TLT (legal and mortgages), AON (pension, actuarial and insurance) Lloyds Banking Group (various) and HSBC (customer service).
Some of the larger firms also recruit for less obvious roles: for example, DAC Beachcroft LLP are a major law firm who have advertised finance and IT roles, whilst financial advisers, Hargreaves Lansdown, have recruited IT apprentices.
And the smaller businesses
Some of the possibly less well-known companies include Park Street, Zen, Everett King and Haines Watts (accountants), Hayes Parsons and Quartz (insurance), Spencer Goldman (estate agents), Deighton Pierce & Glynn (solicitors), as well as LEBC, The McHattie Group and Aspire Consultancy (financial advisors) and Rathbone Investment Management.
These firms commonly also recruit apprentices with examples including Corrigan Associates (accountants), Apex and Pure Risks Ltd (insurance), Mainline Employment (HR), as well as Lyons Davidson and RPC (law).
A whole host of restaurants, business clubs, wine bars and delicatessens have sprung up around the BS1 zone to cater for the palates of the professionals in this quarter and to accommodate their many business lunches and meetings.
Others exist purely to support the actual business needs of the BS1 district. They include hotels, advertising agencies, specialist recruitment agencies, business finance companies, conference facilities, commercial cleaning companies, telecoms engineers specialising in business telephone systems, project management services, printer repairs, reprographics companies specialising in digital printing and exhibition displays, design consultants, commercial photographers, fire alarm systems, office rental, training companies, lift engineers, web design and development, picture framers, interior designers, furniture upholsterers and even a full service animation and interactive production studio!
Meanwhile, other businesses are focused on the needs of the professional men and women working here. These include barbers such as Greenslades, award-winning hairdressers such as Duke & Scarlett, ironing and laundry services such as Bristol Press, menswear and formalwear clothes shops such as Slaters, jewellers, florists, newsagents, health and sports clubs, gift shops, complimentary therapies, beauty salons, language schools, luggage shops, travel agents and even a speed dating agency!
And finally …
The adjacent industries regularly advertise apprenticeship opportunities as well as the professional and financial employers. Examples of adverts seen in recent times include – Absolute Health (fitness instructor), Toni & Guy (hairdressing), Eclipse Hotels, Loch Fyne and an assortment of pubs (chefs), Avis Car Rental (customer service), Chimichanga Restaurant and Starbucks Coffee (hospitality), Blue Group, Civica, Echo Management and Bristol IT (digital / IT), Fusion People and Steam (recruitment), Proteus Creative Communications (digital marketing), SBW (advertising), Purple Fish (PR & communications), Your Dentist Ltd and High Street Dental (dental nurses).
The professional and financial quarter of any major city always attracts corporate clients and ours have attracted a diverse range of adjacent industries to support this thriving sector. If you want to work in this exciting zone, there is a huge choice for you.
